noviembre 4, 2025Introduction A few dozen kilometres from Bacău, between the domed fields of the Siret, stretches Lake Berești – a mirror of water that gathers around it the silence, the sky and the birds’ flights. Here, time seems to slow down: the dam, the reeds, the surrounding villages and the light changing over the shimmering lake give the place a simple but profound beauty. The Berești is not just a reservoir, but also a small natural world where people come to fish, watch the sunset or simply to be still with the water. Key facts and location Berești Lake is located in Bacău County, on the Siret River, and stretches over the municipalities of Sascut, Corbasca, Orbeni, Tătărești, Valea Seacă and Parava. Area: about 2,250 hectares Length: about 15 km Average width: 1 km Year of utilisation: 1986 Purpose: reservoir for hydropower and to regularise the flow of the Siret Access is easy from the E85 motorway (Bacău-Bucuresti), with a detour to the east, and the road offers sweeping views of the valley and surrounding villages. A living ecosystem Although artificial, Berești Lake has quickly become a complex ecosystem, integrated in a Natura 2000 site of avifauna importance. Here have been identified: over 140 bird species, 19 mammal species, 13 species of reptiles and amphibians, 23 species of fish. Swans, herons, terns, grebes, lizards and blackbirds can be spotted along the banks. On the lake’s sandy bottom, carp, catfish and grey mullet dominate the underwater world. The rich vegetation – reeds, reed, poppies, willows – completes the picture of a nature that has regained its balance. Fishing and recreation Berresti is a well-known destination for anglers from all over the region. The wilder eastern shores are favoured for their tranquillity and sense of closeness to nature. Outside of fishing, the place attracts photographers, nature lovers and families looking for a day’s escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Bird watching For nature lovers, Lake Berești is not just a stretch of water, but a living scene where every flight has its own story. At dawn, above the reeds, you can hear the high-pitched calls of crocodiles and the discreet buzzing of wild ducks. Swans, dippers and terns float on the calm shimmering lake, and great egrets, nagers and steppe gulls can be spotted on the shores. The best times for birdwatching are early spring and late autumn, when the lake becomes a veritable highway for migratory birds. In the summer months, the stillness of the water is broken by colonies of choughs and red-breasted blackbirds feeding their young in the reeds. Binoculars, patience and a bit of luck are all you need for an authentic experience. Those who come unhurriedly may discover that the lake has a breath of its own – when the mists rise, when the sun caresses the water, when a bird cuts the sky and all becomes silence. Respect for nature As a protected area, the lake needs attention and respect: Do not leave rubbish on the banks. Avoid loud noises and travelling in hives during the nesting period. Find out about fishing and access regulations. They are prohibited in the protected area: access to reed areas from 1 March to 1 June access by all types of craft from 15 November to 1 March destroying nests, trapping birds, collecting eggs disturbing the peace carrying out commercial activities lighting the fire washing cars and household items and others This is the only way to preserve the delicate balance between man and nature. octubre 26, 2025A start like autumn weather When autumn dresses the hills of Măgurei in shades of mauve, every step on the Via Bacovia trails becomes a poem. Our weekend hike, also captured in the post on the official Via Bacovia page, was more than just a simple outing in nature – it was a journey through the tranquillity, the colours and the soft breath of autumn in Bacău. We set off early in the morning with light rucksacks and open hearts from the bus stop. The air was chilly and the sunlight either reached us or didn’t. The forest at the foot of the Măgurei welcomed us with a clean smell of damp earth and leaves, and the silence was broken only by our footsteps and here and there the barking of dogs, happy that tourists had come on the route. Route “Emil Braescu” Magura The road linking the present with history The chosen route is part of the Via Bacovia network – an initiative that brings together movement, history and heritage. In the Măgurei area, nature is in harmony with the rustic and the people’s life.Among them is Emil Brăescu, the visionary nobleman who built the village school and left behind the Rosetti-Brăescu Mansion – a symbol of responsibility and elegance of yesteryear. The route follows old footpaths, cart tracks and stretches of forest that open up to unexpected views and gentle glades. It’s that moment when you realise that local tourism is not just about movement, but also a connection with place. Landscape that speaks in colour The photos in the post say it all: the foliage of the mountain, the clear sky, the group of smiling hikers. Autumn here has a special intensity – it’s as if every tree wants to be a painter, every valley wants to become poetry.Every now and then, a wide glade offered us a perfect place to pause. A snack, a joke, a smile – and then back on the road. No-one was in a hurry; everyone seemed to feel that it was more important to ‘be there’ than to ‘get somewhere’. Why we love these hikes Via Bacovia isn’t just about marked trails. It means community. It means friends greeting each other at the starting point in the morning and sharing hot tea on arrival. It means rediscovering local nature, the places close to home, the cultural roots and stories that give Bacău its identity. This hike was proof that you don’t need great distances to have an adventure. All it takes is a step, a clear day and a willingness to look at the world around you differently. Close As we descended back down to the village, the sun was setting behind the hills. The light was warm, golden, and everything seemed to be settling down peacefully. We returned home with flushed cheeks, dusty boots and light hearts. Hiking the Via Bacovia is not just a tourist experience – it’s a return to balance, to the poetry within us and the simple beauty of nature. And if you haven’t been yet… well, autumn is the perfect time to discover it. julio 23, 2025Bacăul has its beauties. From Buhoci, climbing up a forest road, in less than 3km we reach the top of a high hill (over 430m) from where we can admire the surroundings, both to the east, where a sea of rolling hills stretches, and to the west where we can see the meanders of the Siret and the city of Bacău. Somewhere below the ridge towards Buhoci-Traian, there is also the protected area Culmea Cucuieți, which covers an area of 6,499ha. It is a wild area, with deserts, scrublands, ruptures and old trees and is the habitat of four protected species: red-bellied owlet, yellow-bellied spoonbill, crested newt, grey-browed tawny nightjar. The protected area covers the territory of the TAUs Bohoci, Gioseni, Horgești, Parincea, Secuieni, Tamași, Traian and Ungureni. Let the pictures do the talking! [...] Read more...
julio 1, 2025Founded by Anastasia Racoviță Costachi and her niece, Maria Rosetti, the church was completed in 1786 by Nastasia’s son-in-law, Iordache Ruset. The inscription moulded in bronze on the church bell, in Cyrillic slove, has the following content:”This bell was made by Mrs Kokona Nastasiea Racoviță, the Visternice from Kălugăra Moruzi Voevod let 7285-1788“. Over time, the monument was repaired in 1868 by D. Cracti and parishioners. Twenty years later, the nobleman Emil Brăescu repaired it at his own expense, and in 1902, with the help of priest G. Comanescu to repair it again. In 1936, the parish owned 12 hectares of agricultural land and another 2 hectares comprising the churchyard and the two cemeteries. Also in 1936, the church was declared Historical Monument, a status it still holds today. Another repair was carried out after the earthquake in 1940, and in 1996 the interior painting was redone by the painter Jan Zărnescu, his wife and son. The church is an architectural hybrid: a three-lobed church with relatively small, polygonal apses on the outside and a strongly recessed porch, above which rises a massive bell-tower (characteristic of churches in the Bacau area, influenced by the architecture of Catholic churches). The exterior is plastered, painted grey, sober, without decorations. It is only in the upper register that a series of painted medallions in the shape of a rhomboid give the church a slightly strange, unusual air. The roof is of galvanised sheet metal, and in the tower the sheet metal is worked in scales, the roof being bulbar. The windows are semicircular. The entrance is on the north side of the porch, above the door there is a niche with a curved end, with a painted icon of the patron saint: St Nicholas. The interior is of the hall type, with no separation between the nave and the pronaos (only a double archway, which is marked by a double arch that unloads onto two strong pilasters), with a cafas on the west side and a wooden catapet. The church has a stone masonry plinth, which takes up the rather large unevenness of the terrain. This slope could have caused possible slippage on the east and north sides, which led to the buttresses in 1913. The vaulting system is wooden. mayo 25, 2025My name is Cătălin, and I’m not from Bacău.I moved to the city 5 years ago and there are Bacauanians who don’t know that there are spectacular places of water, with specific fauna. Or, they know they exist, but haven’t explored them. For some time a new sport has been on the horizon, and I fell in love with it and made others fall in love with it. It wasn’t hard.“SUP going? ” or ” are we boarding tonight? ” became legitimate questions in our small local group of enthusiasts.SUP, the logical abbreviation, coined by others, for Stand Up Paddle Board, and that’s because SUPB would have been hard to pronounce 🙂 I first saw SUP in Vama Veche and rented for an hour. Small waves, me for the first time, so I couldn’t paddle standing, only knees, but it won me over. I ordered as soon as we arrived in Bacău. It wasn’t then the best choice after the precarious research of the deciding elements involved in buying a paddle, but I did it with joy and enthusiasm! I knew about the lake at the Leisure Island, but didn’t want to have wondering eyes on me at my first attempts at stand up paddle, so I asked colleagues about other places with water. I was directed to Coada del Lac, in the Bistrita Delta, next to the old willow forest, a fabulous place when not crowded, full of beauty and tranquillity. There I learnt to “walk on water”. And, since then, whenever I have the opportunity, late in the evening, or long laps of the Danube Delta, big lakes in the country, I have the SUP in the car and I don’t hesitate to enjoy the quiet in the middle of the water. And I’ve convinced many others. My name is Cătălin and I love the middle of the water. Listening to the wind blowing, and the sun shining on me. [...] Read more...
abril 15, 2025“St Michael” Church in Valea Mare – Fărăoani An oasis of faith in the heart of Moldova Situated between Valea de Sus and Valea de Jos, on the border between Valea Mare and Faraoani, the Roman-Catholic Church “St Michael” watches over the community of believers in the area. Its proximity to the 7 Capele pilgrimage route makes this place not only a spiritual reference point, but also a stopover full of history and beauty for those who travel the paths of Moldavia in search of tranquillity. History and local identity Built between 1922 and 1925, the present church was consecrated on 29 September, the feast day of the Archangel Michael, the spiritual patron saint of the community. It replaced a small wooden church that still stands today in the village cemetery – one of the oldest Catholic churches in the area. The parish was reactivated in 1953, after the separation from Fărăoani, and has been led over the years by dedicated priests who have contributed to the formation of a community united around the values of the faith. Dozens of priests, nuns and even bishops have set out on their journey, including Mons. Anton Coșa, Bishop of Chisinau, and Bishop Ioan Duma. Simple architecture with spiritual depth The church impresses with its clean lines and balanced proportions. The sober-elegant façade, bright interior, paintings and wooden furnishings create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. In the centre of the altar is the image of the Archangel Michael, symbol of protection and courage. In the church there is also a special classical organ, played by Fr Ioan Duma (the future bishop) at the consecration of the church. Spiritual life at the heart of the community The liturgical programme during the week is from 07:00 to 18:00. In addition, the church hosts catechesis, worship and youth activities, keeping the faithful in touch with Christian values. Stop on the “7 Chapels Pilgrimage” route Situated very close to the 7 Capele Pilgrimage 7 Chapels, the church is an ideal stopping point for pilgrims. The tranquillity of the place invites you to meditate. It is a place where spirituality blends with the beauty of the landscape. marzo 9, 2025Vovidenia wooden church in Luncani (1777), a jewel of Moldovan spiritual heritage In the picturesque village of Luncani, located in the commune of Margineni, Bacău County, there is one of the most valuable wooden churches in the region: the Vovidenia Church, dedicated to the “Entry of the Virgin Mary into the Church”. The place of worship is not only a place of prayer for the community, but also a living testimony to Moldovan Orthodox history and spirituality. Church history and architecture Built in the 18th century, Vovidenia Church reflects the traditional style of wooden churches in the Moldavian area. Made of massive beams skilfully joined together, the church impresses with its architectural simplicity and the beauty of its hand-carved details. Over time, it has been restored and strengthened, but has managed to retain its authentic charm and is an outstanding example of vernacular religious architecture. The gable roof and modest porch, supported by carved pillars, are distinctive features of the building. The interior painting, in Byzantine style, retains the vivid colours and expressiveness characteristic of Orthodox iconography, although some parts have needed restoration over time. Among the valuable artistic elements is the beautifully carved catapet dating back to the construction of the church. It is adorned with old, hand-painted icons, some of which bear the marks of the passage of time but retain a particular beauty. The church was built by Konatantin Tumurug from Luncani, the initials K and T being carved above the entrance door. Spiritual and cultural importance The Vovidenia Church is not only a place of worship, but also a symbol of the continuing religious traditions of the Luncani community. Here, the faithful gather every year to celebrate the church’s feast day on 21 November, when a special service takes place, full of emotion and piety. Local legend has it that the church was built by a family of boyars in gratitude for a miracle in their lives. It is said that in times of hardship the church was a refuge for those seeking protection and peace of mind. By its resistance in the face of time and its role in the life of the community, the church is considered a true heritage monument. It is included in the list of historical monuments in Bacău County, being protected for its architectural and cultural value. Heritage conservation and promotion To ensure the preservation of the church for future generations, several restoration and protection projects have been initiated. Conservation efforts are supported by local authorities, parishioners and lovers of Romanian religious heritage. Recently, work has been carried out to maintain the roof and strengthen the foundations so that the church can be visited safely by pilgrims and tourists. A visit to the Vovidenia Church in Luncani is an incursion into the past, an opportunity to discover an important part of the Moldovan spiritual and cultural identity. Those who come to this area are invited to admire this soulful monument, to discover the beauty of the ancient icons and to feel the tranquillity that this place of prayer and reflection offers. History and symbolism Vovidenia wooden church in Luncani is more than just a church – it is a living page of history, a symbol of faith and an architectural treasure of Moldova. Through the endeavours of the community and those who cherish its heritage, this place of worship will continue to live on through the ages, preserving in its soul the ancestral faith and tradition. Whoever crosses the threshold of this church will be impressed by its atmosphere of tranquillity and sanctity, a testimony to the steadfast faith of our ancestors. The mansion is declared a historical monument, with code 04B0061/ (BC-II-m-A-00808). After the death of the first owner, the manor passed into the possession of the Greek Zarifopol family. The manor is quite well preserved, it preserves elements of architectural value: interior staircases, firieres, columns, terraces. For a period of time the building housed the school named after the writer Dinu Zarifopol (1921 – 2002), who was born in this area. The ghost that haunts the building is said to be that of Iorgu Zafiropol, who hanged himself on the morning of 30 November 1930, following his failure to find oil on the estate. After the burial the family built the room in which he hanged himself. The place is also known as the Devil’s House. Today the building is closed, inside there are still traces of the former school. Both inside and outside are in a continuous state of disrepair, the terracotta stoves are knocked down, the windows broken, the doors destroyed. mayo 5, 2024From Poiana Ciresului In a place full of peace and tranquillity, on the hills between Racăciuni (village Dumbrăveni) and Helegiu (village Deleni) is the hermitage of the Transfiguration, in a place called Poiana Cireșului. The hermitage was founded by the hieromonk Pahomie Pîrjol (1928-2006), whose tomb is located on the hermitage grounds, Initially the church was built of wood and it gave way over time, A few years ago the construction of a new church began, the work was rather difficult due to lack of funds and labour. The monastery’s feast day is on 6 August, the Transfiguration. The access roads, both from Deleni and Dumbraveni, are quite uneven, in wet or rainy weather being practically impassable, at least with low-guard cars. The access from Dumbraveni is particularly picturesque, the road winding through meadows, meadows, forests with tall trees or shady forests. From Deleni we climbed many years ago, we no longer know the state of the road. The place is particularly quiet. Pilgrims can stay overnight but places are limited and it’s best to call ahead to enquire about availability. [...] Read more...

agosto 18, 2022Welcome to the Ciciola Chapel Located under the high Carunta Peak (717 m) on the picturesque Ciciola Hill in Faraoani, Romania, in a small clearing, the Ciciola Chapel is a place of spiritual peace and natural beauty. This chapel is a first or last stop along the famous 7 Chapels Pilgrimage route, offering visitors a unique feeling of harmony between faith, heritage and breathtaking landscapes. A sacred destination Built to inspire and guide pilgrims, the Ciciola Chapel is more than a landmark – it is a place of reflection and renewal. Located approximately 3 kilometers from the picturesque “Vis” plateau, the chapel offers an ideal setting for prayer, peace or moments of personal tranquility amidst the hills and forests. Part of a rich pilgrimage tradition As the sixth stop, or the first, depending on the direction of travel, on the 7 Chapels Pilgrimage Route, the Ciciola Chapel holds a special place in the spiritual journey through Bacău County. Whether you walk the entire route or visit these chapels separately, Ciciola is a highlight that should not be missed. More than a chapel Visitors to the Ciciola Chapel can enjoy: A magnificent natural setting: the clearing where the chapel is located is of a special beauty, being guarded by diverse and ancient trees. An excellent place for rest and recovery: near the chapel there are tables and benches to eat and rest. There is also a small water spring. Atmosphere of peace: a quiet atmosphere ideal for personal reflection, meditation or spiritual connection. A place with history The place was once called “Cele Trei Cruci”. In 1991-1992 the three crosses were removed from their place (probably in an advanced state of deterioration) and this chapel was built. It is said that those suffering from the plague were brought to this place to be separated from the rest of the villagers, so that the disease would not spread. The families of the sick would bring food and leave it at the edge of the forest, from where they would come to get it. Plan your visit Whether you are a pilgrim in search of spiritual growth, a traveler attracted by history and culture, or an adventurer exploring the hidden gems of Romania, the Ciciola Chapel welcomes you.
